Thinking about a design career, but not sure how to start? The good news is, no matter what your career is, if becoming a designer something you aspire to, it’s completely possible build a design career. Here’s our ultimate cheat sheet to start living your design dreams!
1. Get Familiar with the Design Landscape
Get to know the different types of design career available. Some of the largest industries are Graphic Designing, Interior Designing, Fashion Designing, Web Designing, UI Designing and Jewelry Designing.
Get to know the various job roles / freelancing option in designing – research on the job titles, role descriptions, and challenges. If you haven’t found out the job role that you like best, look at some of the large scale design competitions and see the different design problems they post. Most often than not, these would be the next high growth career fields in design.

2. Practice, Practice, Practice
Practice makes a man (or woman) perfect! Check out the various design challenges and competitions posted online. Try hands-on!

3. Use your right brain Like a Designer
Just starting out! Start thinking like a designer! It doesn’t happen overnight – and takes some time. Observe the various design elements around you – see how they are made, quality of material, inter-connection between elements and usage. So, start now! Get a diary and note down each small ideas that pop up in your head! Soon you would have build an ideas book for reference.

4. Mingle with Designers
If you can’t start ideating about design, start mingling with designers. Observe how they look at elements around them and their opinions. Check out online videos, follow famous designers on their blog/website. If you get a chance to interact, speak to them about how they started out! Understanding their thinking pattern helps improve your design skills, collaborating with others and finding out insights on elements in the design world.

5. Register for a Design Class (in Person)
Enroll in a design class – learn basics, applications in practical fields, computer based simulations, interact with fellow students, understand history of designs and evolution, and practice!
It is easier to think design in a design classroom guided by experienced professionals or faculty. Gives you an edge over online courses plus it helps you focus on the design work and get access to huge library of study materials.
6. Project work
An important part of design learning is hands-on project. Find a project or speak to us to get one! You can also check out paid projects in large companies (though they become bit expensive). Some institutes offer design excursions as part of the project work. Or start a side project and get it reviewed by the design faculty from time to time.
7. Display Your Work
If you have virtual designs, build a website or a blog! If you have hands-on projects, take pictures and post online! Either ways, find a medium to display your work to build audience. It gets you feedback and also shows you what the audience is interested in.
Over time, the feedback will start changing as you become more experienced in your work. You will also see where the design industry is going and start transitioning into a being a well-informed design professional confident of your work!
Also start getting involved in peer reviews. Build a group and each of you can display your work. Rent out a small hall and send invites to all you know – the feedback cycle helps and the more feedback you take the better you sharpen your skills.
