Interior Design Career Basics

Interior design is an attractive field, allowing professionals functioning within the industry to merge their creative acumen with business skills to develop beautiful and functional spaces. The industry is set to continue growing, this being the right time to go ahead with an interior designer profession. There is a boom in real estate, construction and consumers’ ability to spend on beautification and developing functional residential and commercial spaces.

INTERIOR DESIGN CAREER BASICS

On a fundamental level, interior designers devise, design and develop living and working properties for an immense spread of clients. They can work either as part of a design firm or as freelancers. Designers can develop expertise in multiple areas such as green buildings, home spaces or corporate designs.

Contrary to popular belief, there are JUST 3 things that define an interior designer:

1)         Creativity – When imagination and thoughts flow free.

2)         Training – The advanced softwares to give shape to these thoughts

3)         Determination – To learn and act on creativity and training

An interior designer requires a professional diploma or a master diploma which covers end to end from theories of the perfect space to the advanced and latest technologies to design and marketing your ideas. The diploma must cover coursework in interior design, such as drawing and computer-aided design (CAD).  Programs in interior design can be found at select colleges and specialized design schools and institutes.

CONTINUING EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES:

Professional certifications are available to designers, professionals or amateurs, to continuously inform them of the latest trends and changes. These are available at design schools as short term courses outlining a particular area or field of specialization. Professional courses can also be undertaken to develop skills in the latest technologies and new softwares that are launched in the market; and sharpen skills to keep up with the fast changing design field. A number of schools have certificates in various areas of expertise, including: sustainable spaces, spatial hypothesis, commercial interior designs, corporate walkthroughs and designing/mapping places of historic importance. There are also regular conferences scheduled by international communities of the design space, namely ICOGRADA (International Council of Design).
