Stuck in a small room? Struggling to accommodate all your stuff? Implement these 5 POWER tips to make the room look bigger and spacious.
- Keep it LOW : Furniture close to the ground with a height less than half of the room height makes your room feel taller. It creates a sense of openness and leaves the top half of the room airy and breathing. Keep the bed legs shorter or simple enough, just spread the mattress on the floor. That way, it is more fun and easy!
- DITCH the curtains: Take off those bulky curtains and let the natural light come in. Remove excess cloth items like rugs, screens, table covers, etc which clutter the room. You get to feel the extra space without the curtains. Additional advantage – without the curtains, your eye travels across the room to the outside making the outside a continuum of your room. Since there is no visual separation (curtains), it makes the room feel bigger.
- MAX your furniture: Buy furniture which serve multiple functions. Eg, a book holder which can serve as a table. Or a coffee table with 4 seats as shown below. They save space and give the room an up-market feel.
- CLEAR the path: In a small room, it is of immense importance that you clear the path across the room. When dealing with a small room, maximize the space by grouping all the pieces to the edges so that the room does not have a claustrophobic feel. Utilize the corners for people to pass unhindered through the room.
- Use WHITE: White has immense reflective quality – the entire light that comes into the room is reflected from the wall thus making the room look airy, spacious and serene. Paint the walls and ceiling in the same colour to provide a continuum to the eye and thus blur boundaries which makes the ceiling feel higher. Second advantage of using white is that you can play with colours of other elements in the room and provide contrasts wherever required.
