Poster Design: 7 Tips to Create Awesome Posters

Do you want to create attention grabbing posters ? Read on to find 7 simple tips to create amazing posters.

1. Grab  Attention

Posters need to grab attention! First and foremost, your entire poster should be structured to ensure that the audience looks at your poster and identifies with the content. Decide on a great photograph relevant to the poster. You can use imagery – soft, subtle, strong or disturbing as required. Some graphic designers also go for large amount of white space. Whatever, be your choice, ensure that there is enough provocation in the poster that the audience looks at it. You can also experiment with font styles and size; or combine some of the above features to make it visually appealing. This first step is the most important.

2. K.I.S.S –  “Keep It Simple, Stupid”

Too much information, colour, words, photos or graphic elements is never a good idea. Your audience will not want to read an essay on a poster –  they would rather want to pick up the key points from the poster. For the interested audience, you can provide a phone number, website address or a facebook page where they can get additional information.

3. Simplify your fonts

Some of the greatest posters have the most simple of fonts. Do not make your fonts difficult to read or understand. Rather make it so simple that the audience does not have trouble understanding the poster content. You may experiment with colors, but again not too much. Also, ensure that not more than 3 fonts styles are used. Anything more spoils the poster.

4. Prioritize your information

In general, an audience scans the poster from top to bottom. Make sure that the top portion of the poster contains the most relevant and vital piece of information. Put your eye-grabbing information at the top, followed by further smaller details. It should be easy for the eyes to follow the content of the poster in one flow –  and not jump across the poster for related information.

5. Color Codes

Colors set the tone of the poster. RED indicates strong visual aggression or passion, whereas BLUE indicates calmness. If you are unsure of colors, use the standard palettes. Poster color should go with the content. If you are advertising for a relaxed beach report, using RED is in contrast with the idea. Also, try to keep the poster within a color scheme. More often that not, do not mix multiple colors, but keep a color scheme in mind and use variation of the same color for best effect.

6. Measure the information

Any word that is put into a poster can be measured with 2 key principles –  importance and relevance. Importance means that this information is essential to the audience. Relevance means that this information is useful for the audience. Ensure that there is balance across the poster in terms of importance and relevance. For example, a phone number is relevant but not important, since the audience can have other ways of reaching out to you (facebook, mail, website). On the other hand, name of the event (say, a school/college fest) is important as this is essential for the user to seek out more information about the event; but not relevant as the name by itself does not contain useful information to the audience.

7. Bend the Rules!

The last point here – it is important to follow the rules to give the optimum poster –  but there is always a scope to bend the rules. Experiment with ideas, images, fonts, colors and; if nothing fits your idea, bend or break the rules to create a poster that appeals the most to the audience. In creative studies, you may sometimes need to bend the rules to get the best out of you.
